Cannabis Treatment

At Neurology of Cannabis we understand the neurological aspects of treating medical conditions with medical cannabis. Many doctors overlook this very important part of the treatment process. The human brain has naturally occurring binding site receptors that respond to our own internally produced cannabinoid chemicals (endocannabinoids). In the same way the drug Sinemet assists Parkinson’s patients to manage the symptoms of dopamine deficiency, naturally occurring chemical compounds in medical marijuana, called phytocannabinoids, can produce positive treatment results for patients with a deficiency of endocannabinoids. We believe that cannabinoid deficiency is the root cause of a variety of conditions.

Although there are over 100 phytocannabinoids in medical marijuana, the two main compounds are THC and CBD. These compounds, along with the aromatic terpenes, work together, to produce the ‘entourage effect’ or ‘whole plant’ benefit of using cannabis. From studies with synthetic THC and CBD we now know that these molecules work better together (as nature intended) compared with either in isolation.

THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is primarily responsible for the psychoactive effects of medical marijuana, also known as a euphoria or ‘high’. THC is also important for many other therapeutic biological effects.

CBD or cannabidiol, also has many biological effects. These include anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory and antianxiety properties.

The benefits of THC are numerous and they stem from the chemical compound’s ability to connect or ‘bind’ with receptors in the brain. Some of the benefits of THC include:

Reduce Anxiety

As a relaxant, marijuana has the potential to provide immediate calm. As an approved medication we are happy to recommend cannabis as a highly effective therapy for all forms of anxiety, including adjustment disorder, generalized anxiety and PTSD.

Pain Relief

Patients struggling with acute or chronic pain find that cannabis therapy provides fast-acting and long-term relief. Pain originating from muscular spasm, inflammation or other illness, may respond to cannabis therapy. Patients with opioid dependent pain are often able to switch to this more holistic and effective alternative.

Alleviate Insomnia

Curing insomnia with cannabis may be one of the most gratifying interventions we offer. Patients with a qualifying medical condition find that once cannabis therapy is started, quality of sleep improves. When sleep improves, other symptoms, including daytime fatigue, depression and cognitive impairment, also improve.
Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring neurotransmitters in our bodies. Phytocannabinoids such as THC and CBD are useful when there is a genetic or acquired deficiency of our own endocannabinoids.
